A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN ENGLISH AND JAVANESE AFFIXATION
ABSTRACT
This research entitled “A comparative study between English and Javanese affixation” is intended to find out the similarities and differences between English and Javanese in some aspects: types and forms of affixation.
This research uses descriptive comparative method. The researcher describes the data in the form of words rather than numbers. The researcher collects the data of affixation from books, newspaper and magazines as data source of this research. The technique used in collecting the data are noting and separating technique. In analyzing the data, the researcher applies descriptive qualitative and comparative method. The researcher describes the data in the forms of words rather than numbers. Then the researcher uses comparative method in this research. The researcher compares between English and Javanese affixation to find the result. The researcher focuses on looking for the similarities and differences between English and Javanese affixation. She identifies the types and forms of English and Javanese affixation.
The result shows that (1) there are two types of English affixation namely prefixation and suffixation (2) there are four types of Javanese affixation they are prexation, suffixation, infixation, and circumfixation (3) the forms of affixation in English is divided into two: affixation by one morpheme (prefixation and suffixation) and affixation by more than one morpheme (suffixation by more than one morpheme and combination of prefixation and suffixation) (4) the form of Javanese affixation is divided into two forms: affixation by one morpheme (prefixation, suffixation and infixation), affixation by more than one morpheme (circumfixation, combination of prefixation and suffixation, combination of infixation and suffixation and combination of circumfixation and suffixation) (5) the similarities on both languages in affixation occur in the type of affixation in both languages (prefixation and suffixation), the form of affixation in one morpheme (prefixation and suffixation) and the form of affixation in more than one morpheme (combination of prefixation and suffixation and suffixation by more than one morpheme) (6) the differences of affixation in English and Javanese occur in the type of affixation: English does not have infixation and circumfixation, in the forms of affixation: Javanese also needs one morpheme in infixation and two morphemes in circumfixation. English does not have combination of infixation and suffixation and combination of circumfixation and suffixation.
